Abstract

The development of blockchain technology has led to the emergence of Cryptocurrency, a digital asset traded electronically and decentralized. With the fourth largest internet population in the world, Indonesia has an enormous potential crypto market. However, the unclear legal status of Cryptocurrency in Indonesia raises doubts for investors and business actors. This study analyzes the legality of Cryptocurrency in Indonesia by considering applicable regulations, the potential of the crypto market, and the effectiveness of Cryptocurrency legalization for Indonesia at the international level. The method is descriptive-analytical, with secondary data from various sources, including regulations, policies, literature, and market data. The study results show that Cryptocurrency has not been recognized as a legal tender in Indonesia but is recommended as a commodity that can be traded on a futures exchange based on Bappebti Regulation 11 of 2020. Although the regulation has regulated the trading of crypto assets, there are still legal loopholes that can pose risks to investors and crypto industry players. Therefore, more comprehensive and integrated regulations are needed to create a safe and sustainable Cryptocurrency ecosystem. The potential of the crypto market in Indonesia is enormous, with the number of investors continuing to increase. However, legal plunder is still a significant obstacle to its optimal utilization. Therefore, broader educational and literacy efforts are needed for the public to improve their understanding of Cryptocurrency and its potential for the Indonesian economy.
